Zentangle® UMT Bugles and an Inchie

The Diva's Challenge was a "UMT" (Use My Tangle) for this week. The tangle chosen was Bugles by Joyce Evans. This is a tangle that was fun to play with. Take a peek and try some yourself!

The Inchie prompt for this week was Khaki. At first, I was going to do the Khaki Campbell Duck, but I have done a duck before. Then, I remembered that when I was teaching art we did a section on color theory. We use a paper plate to add the primaries plus black and white and I showed them how to make their own color wheel. Of course, some of the boys (yes, I know that's sexist, but it is true on this particular occasion) just couldn't resist mixing everything. And, what did they get? A horrible khaki color that they thought was just wonderful :)

  3. Your take on bugles is wonderful. I struggle with that tangle. I also love your inchie. I know exactly what you mean about mixing the paint, lol. Cute idea.

    1. Thanks, Cathy. Some tangles are just tricky. If you wait a few months and come back to it, you may find it easier to do. Remember the Zen part of Zentangle, if it's causing issues, there are lots more tangles to choose from instead :) Yes, I do miss teaching the young ones...sometimes LOL!

  5. Alot of boys are into wonderful things that are not always pretty and mostly gross. LOL I love the inchie though a take on the theme that I bet no one else will have.

    1. I always admired the spunk of the children who always wanted to go their own way. Too bad we aren't all comfortable with having such an adventurous spirit. I think that's why I have started art journaling, so I can make Khaki :)

    1. Hummm, I drew all the "smiles" first, then the upper lip, then the cones, then the attached arms. I hope that helps.

  9. Great take on Bugles! Delicate and playful.
I just have to share regarding "boys". I have a ten year-old son. The other day we drove through the city (Frankfurt). We drove past beautiful old villas and the Main River and I commented on the beauty of thse things. Then we drove past a construction site surrounded by a high wire fence and circles of barbed wire on top. Suddenly my son pipes up: "Look at that barbed wire! It's so pretty!"

    1. Priceless! Aren't they just amazing? I am so grateful for having 4 precious boys. I wrote down some of the crazy things they said, but I wish I had done more. When my oldest son tuned 40, I presented him with a book with everything I could remember. He loved it!

    2. Four boys ! That must have been a lively house. I'm astonished you could remember enough to fill a book. If I had four boys, they'd probably each get a slip of paper with about three quotes or something. You did good.

    3. Well, you see, as you get older you remember things from the past all the time, it's what you were going to do right now that is the problem HAHA!

  11. Love the bugles - so many ways to experience it. One of the best children's class I taught was 4 young boy - age 9 to 11 - after the first few patterns they were so into it wanting more and their tiles were a delight.

  16. Jean, this reminds me of birds you see flying in formation, such a majestic sight in our skies. You've really nailed it with the consistency and spacing, it looks awesome xx

    1. Thanks so much, Chrissie. I do remember how beautiful a site it was to see birds in a formation flight. Not much of that here. Maybe, because of the heat, the birds just stay.

    1. Thanks, Kate. It's funny how different tangles are easier or harder for some. I think it may have something to do with math and how our brain is wired. Kind of like, I like vanilla and you like chocolate. Why?

  21. Hi Jean

I love how delicate you have made the Bugles!! It i so lovely the way you have chosen which "extensions" to put and then danced some others away from the Bugles - most graceful!!
